Kahli Frater is quite certain about the highlight of her year as trainee at injury management specialists Work Options. “It’s definitely working with all the people here, I’ve become friends with everyone.
“It’s such a supportive environment. Over the past year, my confidence has grown so much, a year ago I would never have been able to present at staff meetings or do all the work over the telephone that I do now.”
Kahli started her Business Traineeship with Work Options at Harris Park in Sydney’s west in January 2009, and successfully completed her Certificate III in Business. Once her traineeship finished, Work Options immediately employed Kahli full time.
Work Options is a specialist injury management, occupational health and safety and employment solutions consulting firm, and delivers injury prevention, injury management and employment placement services.
Kahli’s role includes dealing with clients face to face and over the telephone, as well as talking to insurance agents, dealing with suppliers, and data entry.
“During my traineeship, we chose the subjects for my Certificate course so they were relevant to what I was doing at Work Options. I didn’t really know much about Work Options before I stared here, but in my Occupational Health and Safety subject we did workers’ compensation and rehabilitation, so that was really useful. I also did other subjects like customer service and customer complaints, and time management, which helped a lot.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with the clients directly and getting to know them. Many of them need help getting set up to use our services such as our job seeker support. This has just confirmed for me that I want to do further study, and I’ve always been interested in psychology.”
In fact, Kahli has just started university, and will be studying Psychology full time for the next four years. University also involves a move from home in Sydney’s western suburbs, where she’s always lived, to Newcastle, so it is a whole new experience.
“The Psychologists on staff at Work Options have been really helpful, so now I know I’m interested in pursuing a career in this field. I am really interested in the counselling and rehabilitation aspect.”
“I’ll be looking for part-time work while I’m at uni, but hopefully I can have the full uni experience. And I’m looking forward to the prospect of being able to come back to Work Options and do some work experience, and maybe even return to work as a Psychologist!”
