WorkVentures Connect
is a high impact network of Connect
Centres located on public housing estates of high disadvantage
and social exclusion. These centres work to directly
bridge Australia's
digital divide, building better
communities for people, particularly those at risk.
The development of WorkVentures Connect is a response
to the need for disadvantaged communities to have access
to Information Technology, primarily to improve their
chances of obtaining employment.
In 2001, WorkVentures, in partnership with the NSW
Department of Housing, piloted a Connect Centre on a public housing estate in
Macquarie Fields, NSW. The success of this venture
highlighted the potential for expansion of the project
to other disadvantaged communities. Additional
partnerships with Microsoft, the Westpac Foundation and
IBM enabled a network of Connect Centre's to form.
The network now includes 4
centres located on public
housing estates in inner and south-west Sydney at
Macquarie Fields, Waterloo, Claymore and Woolloomooloo. These
centres provide over 10,000 residents with the
opportunity to access Information Technology in order to
utilise job search facilities, gain new skills through
informal and accredited training programs, and get
connected to the Internet and computers.
Each Connect Centre has fifteen computer terminals with Internet
access, printer and fax facilities and supported
assistance from staff and volunteers.
The next stage of the program plans to replicate
the Connect Centre model
on up to fifty public housing estates in NSW and
throughout Australia. There are currently a total of
130,000 public housing units in NSW with a minimum of
750,000 residents.
Connect Centres are one part of WorkVentures' strategic response
to Australia's digital divide challenge.
WorkVentures
Connect IT computer reuse program is another
complementary initiative, providing refurbished
ex-corporate and Government PCs at affordable prices for
other not-for-profit organisations, schools and people
on low incomes.
