Claymore community cookbook released

WorkVentures' Connect Centre at Claymore has released a new cookbook for the local community, designed and produced by the participants in our recent Community Kitchen course.

The course, held over October and November, was supported by a Community Grant from the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation.

A number of youth from the Campbelltown area took part in the course, which included successfully gaining accreditation in two hospitality modules, 'Follow workplace hygiene procedures' and 'Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner'. They also gained their Senior First Aid certificate.

The first five lessons of the project consisted of theory and the remainder of the course consisted of putting that theory into practice, with all the participants taking part in practical cooking exercises. The participants also designed, wrote, edited and published the Claymore Community Cookbook for distribution within the community, free of charge. The cookbook will also be used as a resource for future cooking groups.

According to trainer Tammy Conway,

"The group definitely enjoyed the practical component of this course and commented how fun it was to learn how to cook with a variety of healthy foods that many of them had never tried before. I was impressed with their willingness to try new flavours and discuss ways of changing recipes to suit what ingredients they may have in their fridges at home. Many of the students were self-confessed junk food eaters and rarely chose to drink water, but they all embraced the idea of making more healthier food choices for themselves from now on, knowing how food effects their bodies. In my opinion courses such as this one makes a dramatic impact on the health and continued wellbeing of all participants."
