News release: Partnership of social enterprises makes jobs out of waste

Two NSW-based social enterprises have today formally launched a partnership to reduce e-waste and increase job opportunities for people with a disability.

In the past two months, a trial between WorkVentures and Mai-Wel E-Cycling Services has led to more than 30,000kg of computers and accessories being successfully recycled.

Businesses and government entities donate several thousand computers each year to WorkVentures, a Sydney-based social enterprise. The Westpac Group, a founding partner, is the largest donor. 75% of these computers are refurbished and the balance is recycled.  This recycling partnership with Mai-Wel will support employment opportunities for people with a disability in the Hunter.

“All Australians should be able to share in our digital future,” said WorkVentures CEO Arsenio Alegre. “Through our refurbishment program we can provide low income families and non-profit organisations with access to affordable, quality computers.”

“However the management of computer waste is a global problem. Recent media reports have highlighted shocking environment hazards as well as risks to data security including identity theft,” Mr Alegre said. “It’s not only computers; we receive large numbers of printers, servers, racks and other equipment through our collection process that can’t be reused.  Through Mai-Wel’s disassembly and recycling processes we can ensure that almost nothing goes into landfill.”

Mai-Wel E-Cycling Services, based in East Maitland in the Hunter region of NSW, provides a comprehensive recycling service of all electronic goods. As a subsidiary of The Mai-Wel Group, the e-cycling operations were established to develop jobs and training for people with a disability. According to Mai-Wel’s CEO, Pennie Kearney, “meaningful employment gives individuals the opportunity to be active members of their community. Mai-Wel E-Cycling Services has grown rapidly since it was established in 2009 and we're pleased to bring a new partner on board to help us further expand the business.”
