WorkVentures' computers go to families in many situations. Every customer is an individual and every computer meets different needs. The family’s new computer arrived just before Christmas. “It was a Christmas present and necessity combined,” says Teresa.
As a single supporting parent with five children at home, Teresa was glad when she heard of fully reconditioned computers available at low prices. “We had an old computer, but it was on its last legs – giving us endless trouble. It was time to look for something better.”
WorkVentures sent Teresa a flyer setting out the various options, prices and methods of payment. “We got one with a larger screen,” Teresa says. “It was worth the bit extra. And it’s beautiful. It goes like a dream, with no problems at all.”
The computer is getting plenty of use from the young family, whose ages range from 13 to 23. “My daughter is in year 10 and doing photography and ceramics as part of her School Certificate. Presentation makes up a significant part of the marks, so she’s getting real value out of it. It’s been used for science assignments too, and for year 8 work. I’ve enjoyed mucking around and getting familiar with the computer myself. I’m a two-finger typist, but the kids are better.”
Because the computer has presented no technical problems, Teresa hasn’t had to call the WorkVentures helpline. “I did telephone while it was on order to get some details on sending in the money, and the people on the phone were really friendly. So if I did have any problems, I know there are good people there who’d help if I had any questions. I work part-time at a high school, so I talk to computer people there too.”
Teresa says the next step is the internet. “We’ll be getting on to that, because more and more assignments are asking kids to research on the web as well as using books.”
